The winners of the Atlantic Book Awards were announced last night at a festive celebration in Nova Scotia. The Margaret and John Savage First Book Award recognizes the best first book of fiction or non-fiction published in the previous year by an Atlantic writer.

Transatlantic congratulates Kathleen Ernst whose novel MEET CAROLINE, was
awarded the Tofte/Wright Children’s Literature Award by the Council for Wisconsin Writers. MEET CAROLINE is the first book in the 2012 American Girl historical series about Caroline Abbott. The stories are based around the War of 1812. As the War of 1812 begins, so does the story of Caroline’s bravery.

Congratulations to Shauna Singh Baldwin whose novel THE SELECTOR OF SOULS has been awarded the 2012 Anne Powers Fiction Prize by the Council for Wisconsin Writers.

Singh Baldwin skillfully interweaves the lives of her two main characters over the course of a turbulent decade, blending their personal stories with the politics, policies, and deeprooted misogyny that promoted female infanticide and abortion in India during the 1990s. Her message comes through clearly without didacticism as each of her characters deals with complex problems that have no easy answers. This author also does a superb job of illuminating a variety of Indian cultures for a Western audience that is ignorant or oblivious, and usually both. I had a very hard time putting this book down, and recommend it highly”

A.S.A. Harrison.
