Transatlantic is proud to note that four of our authors have been shortlisted for the 2021 OLA Forest of Reading: ALICE FLECK’S RECIPES FOR DISASTER by Rachelle Delaney, HOCKEY NIGHT IN KENYA Danson Mutinda and Eric Walters, illustrated by Claudia Dávila, THE KING OF JAM SANDWICHES by Eric Walters, SISTERS OF THE WOLF by Patricia Miller-Schroeder and THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON STEREOTYPES: HOW SCIENCE IS TACKLING UNCONSCIOUS BIAS by Tanya Lloyd Kyi.

Organized by the Ontario Library Association, the Forest of Reading Awards are the largest recreational reading program in Canada. The nominated titles are chosen by school and library staff, and since October 2019, over 270,000 children have read nominated books, which include Canadian fiction and non-fiction books by English and French-language authors.

ALICE FLECK’S RECIPES FOR DISASTER by Rachelle Delaney (Puffin Canada) was shortlisted for the Silver Birch Award, which recognizes English language fiction for ages 8-10. Rachelle Delaney is the author of several middle-grade novels, including The Metro Dogs of Moscow, which was a CLA Book of the Year Honor Book, as well as a finalist for the Silver Birch Award and the Red Cedar Award, among others. Its sequel, The Circus Dogs of Prague, was shortlisted for the Pacific Northwest Library Association Young Reader’s Choice Award. The Bonaventure Adventures won BC’s Chocolate Lily Award in 2019, and Clara Voyant, her most recent novel, is shortlisted for this year’s Chocolate Lily Award.

HOCKEY NIGHT IN KENYA by Danson Mutinda and Eric Walters, illustrated by Claudia Dávila (Orca Book Publishers) was shortlisted for the Silver Birch Express Award, which recognizes English language fiction and nonfiction for ages 8-10. Eric Walters is a Member of the Order of Canada and the author of over 115 books that have collectively won more than 100 awards including the Governor General’s Literary Award for The King of Jam Sandwiches. A former teacher, Eric began writing as a way to get his fifth-grade students interested in reading and writing. Eric is a tireless presenter, speaking to over 100,000 students per year in schools across the country. He lives in Guelph, Ontario.

THE KING OF JAM SANDWICHES by Eric Walters (Orca Book Publishers) was shortlisted for the Red Maple Award, which recognizes English language fiction for ages 12-14. 

SISTERS OF THE WOLF by Patricia Miller-Schroeder (Dundurn Press) was also shortlisted for the Red Maple Award. Patricia Miller-Schroeder has a master’s degree in biological anthropology and has written seventeen children’s books on nature, the environment, and science. She lives in Regina, Saskatchewan.

THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON STEREOTYPES: HOW SCIENCE IS TACKLING UNCONSCIOUS BIAS by Tanya Lloyd Kyi (Kids Can Press) was shortlisted for the Yellow Cedar Award, which recognizes English language nonfiction for ages 9-14. Tanya Lloyd Kyi writes both fiction and nonfiction on topics related to science, pop culture, social history — or a combination of the three. Her recent books include Under Pressure, Prince of Pot, and Mya’s Strategy to Save the World. Tanya lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, with her family.
