HSSilentWifeCovWe are thrilled to share the exciting news that the movie adaptation of the #2 New York Times bestseller THE SILENT WIFE by A.S.A Harrison, her debut psychological thriller now published in over 30 territories, with over a million copies sold internationally, has been fully financed and begins shooting in 2016. Initially optioned by Nicole Kidman as a “passion project” specifically to play the lead Jodi Brett, the team now includes Oscar-nominated Fatal Attraction director Adrian Lyne and Hollywood screenwriter Billy Ray (Captain Phillips and Hunger Games). Film deal arranged by Dana Spector of Paradigm on behalf of Samantha Haywood of the Transatlantic Agency.

Full story in Screen Daily:

EXCLUSIVE: Fatal Attraction director boards script from Captain Phillips writer Billy Ray.

Oscar-nominated Fatal Attraction director Adrian Lyne is set to make his directorial come-back on Nicole Kidman thriller The Silent Wife.

FilmNation has swooped on international sales rights to the package, which is seen as one of the hottest prestige titles heading into the AFM.

In Billy Ray’s (Captain Phillips) buzzed-about screenplay, Kidman will play Jodi, a dedicated wife who, despite her husband Todd’s frequent indiscretions, continues to play the part with immaculate precision.

When confronted with the brutal truth of him leaving her for a younger woman, Jodi will not accept defeat. What begins as a tragic dissolution of a marriage quickly spirals into a game of cat and mouse with calamitous stakes.

First reported on two years ago, the long-time Kidman passion project – based on the original bestselling book by A.S.A. Harrison – has now got fresh impetus through Oscar-nominee Ray’s script and suspense thriller-drama specialist Lyne.

Kidman and Per Saari’s Blossom Films (Rabbit Hole) are producing with Paula Mazur and Mitchell Kaplan’s Mazur/Kaplan Company (Nim’s Island) and Lyne.

Lyne, known for 80’s hits including Flashdance and 1990 romance-drama Indecent Proposal, made his last directorial outing on 2002 romance-thriller Unfaithful, which starred Richard Gere and Diane Lane.

CAA, which represents Lyne, Kidman, and Ray, will handle US sales and brokered the deal with FilmNation for the latter to handle international sales.

The production will next look to cast the male lead before a potential 2016 shoot.

“The Silent Wife is reminiscent of thrillers such as Fatal Attraction, Gone Girl and Unfaithful,” said Mazur.

“In Adrian’s Lyne’s masterful hands, audiences can expect to be thrilled and entertained.”

Kidman, who stars in Ray’s upcoming adaptation of Oscar-winning Spanish-language hit The Secret In Their Eyes, is also represented by attorney Alan Wertheimer at Jackowa Tyerman and Media Talent Group.

Ray is also represented by attorney Peter Nichols at Lichter, Grossman, Nichols, Adler & Feldman. Mazur/Kaplan is represented by Shelley Surpin of Surpin & Mayersohn.

This year, FilmNation has produced Denis Villeneuve’s Story Of Your Life, starring Amy Adams, and John Lee Hancock’s The Founder with Michael Keaton.

Glen Basner’s New York outfit is in development on The Good House, set to star Meryl Streep and Robert De Niro.

Among Blossom’s development titles is an adaptation of best-seller Reconstructing Amelia, set at HBO, and a biography of singer Dusty Springfield.

Blossom is partnered with Reese Witherspoon’s Pacific Standard Productions on Jean-Marc Vallee’s Big Little Lies, a limited HBO series that will begin filming in January of 2016 and star Kidman and Witherspoon.

Book-cenrtic Mazur/Kaplan’s development slate includes The Guernsey Literary And Potato Peel Pie Society and All The Bright Places set to star Elle Fanning.

The Silent Wife

The Silent WifeMazur-Kaplan along with Nicole Kidman and her Blossom Films, have optioned the film rights to this summer’s sleeper breakout literary hit THE SILENT WIFE, by A.S.A. Harrison for Kidman to star and produce with Blossom partner Per Saari and Mazur-Kaplan partners Paula Mazur and Mitchell Kaplan.  Mazur-Kaplan will finance development.

THE SILENT WIFE is an emotionally-charged psychological thriller that tracks a marriage headed for catastrophe: Todd, a cheater, exists in dual worlds; Jodi, whose carefully ordered existence is in jeopardy, has nothing left to lose.

Blossom Films is a production company founded by Nicole Kidman and Per Saari in 2010.  The first production by the company was RABBIT HOLE, which earned Kidman both Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations.

Blossom is currently developing FAMILY FANG, written by David Lindsay-Abaire, an adaptation of best-seller RECONSTRUCTING AMELIA for HBO, Simon Kinberg’s THE EIGHTH WONDER for Fox, an adaptation of the best-selling novel LITTLE BEE for BBC Films, a biography of singer Dusty Springfield, and a remake of Alvin Sargent’s LOVE PAIN AND THE WHOLE DAMN THING.

Mazur/Kaplan is a books-to-screen production company lead by award-winning producer Paula Mazur (NIM’S ISLAND, THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES, CORRINA, CORRINA) and prominent bookseller and National Book Foundation honoree, Mitchell Kaplan.  Mazur/Kaplan is currently developing the bestseller THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY with Studio Canal, which Simon Curtis is attached to direct. They are also producing, with Studio Canal, the bestseller MAJOR PETTIGREW’S LAST STAND currently being adapted by Jack Thorne and Deborah Moggach.  Most recently, they produced the AACTA (Australian Academy of Cinema and Televisions Arts Awards) nominated film, RETURN TO NIM’S ISLAND starring Bindi Irwin for Walden Media.

A. S. A. Harrison began her adult life by diving into the art world, rubbing elbows with the likes of Andy Warhol and William Burroughs, and her forays into performance art, and later art criticism, led her to write a number of nonfiction books. But Harrison truly found her calling with fiction and her chilling debut novel, THE SILENT WIFE.

Unfortunately, Harrison passed away in April, just a few months shy of seeing her debut novel simultaneously published in the US, Canada, and the UK, and translated in over 20 languages. Harrison proved to be a dangerously talented writer who grips the reader from page one.  A.S.A. Harrison (1948-2013) was the author of four non-fiction books, and THE SILENT WIFE was her debut novel. It will be translated into five languages. She was married to a visual artist in Toronto.

Harrison’s estate was represented by Paradigm on behalf of Samantha Haywood and the Transatlantic Agency.

The sleeper hit of the summer: The Silent Wife

The Silent WifeIt’s undoubtedly one of the hottest books this summer, and yet it’s not one of the big household-name blockbusters you’d expect: it’s a paperback original by a debut fiction author, and Canadian at that. The Silent Wife by A.S.A. Harrison is being called “this year’s Gone Girl” – only better – by media across North America, and the sales are beginning to prove it.

The Silent Wife, on the New York Times bestseller list since August 4. Reviews consistently rave about this psychological thriller done right: “thrill-ride of a debut” says the Globe and Mail, and “it’s a deliciously dark tale, smarter, more layered and insightful than standard genre fare” writes Maclean’s. Rarely does a sleeper hit like this climb the ranks among some of the biggest writers and the most anticipated releases of the year. The New York Times profiled the novel and the late Ms. Harrison’s success in a piece about the incredible momentum after just one month on-sale. With over 31,000 copies in print in Canada and 144,000 in the US, the ride has just begun.
