New proprietary streaming service Quibi, which is meant to be watched on your phone, is teaming up with Ace Entertainment to adapt Beware That Girl by Teresa Toten, Variety reports. JT Billings is attached as head writer and Ace Entertainment founder Matt Kaplan will executive produce alongside Spencer Berman. Paul Kim is a Co-Executive Producer and Teresa Toten will serve as a consulting producer.
Beware That Girl was published by Doubleday Canada and follows Kate O’Brien, a scholarship student at the Waverly School in NYC. Kate has her work cut out for her: her plan is to climb the social ladder and land a spot at Yale. She’s already found her “people” among the senior class “it” girls—specifically in the cosseted yet deeply damaged Olivia Sumner. Olivia considers Kate the best friend she’s always needed, the sister she never had. When Mark Redkin joins the Waverly administration, he immediately charms his way into the faculty’s and students’ lives—becoming especially close to Olivia. It becomes increasingly obvious that Redkin poses a threat to Kate, too, in a way she can’t reveal yet can’t afford to ignore.
Teresa Toten is the award-winning author of The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B, which won the Governor General’s Award for Children’s Literature and the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children’s Book Award, and was a finalist for the TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award. She is also the author of the acclaimed Blondes series, as well as The Game, The Onlyhouse and, with Eric Walters, The Taming. She has been nominated for the OLA White Pine Award and the IODE Violet Downey Book Award, among numerous other prizes. Although she was born in Zagreb, Croatia, Teresa left for Canada on that very same day. Teresa is represented by Samantha Haywood.
