Transatlantic is proud to share that WHO NEEDS GAY BARS? by Greggor Mattson has been awarded the Gold Medal in the LGBTQ+ Non-Fiction – Academic Category of the 2024 IPPY Awards!

The Independent Publisher Book Awards were created in 1996 to support independent, university, and self-published titles, and to recognize “those who exhibit the courage, innovation, and creativity to bring about change in the world of publishing.”

WHO NEEDS GAY BARS?: Bar-Hopping Through America’s Endangered LGBTQ+ Places by Greggor Mattson, Professor and Chair of Sociology at Oberlin College, and a member of its program in Gender, Sexuality & Feminist Studies, is loosely informed by the Damron Guide, the so-called “Green Book” of gay travel. Mattson logged 10,000 miles on the road to all corners of the United States visiting LBGTQ+ establishments in the “big four” gay cities and beyond. His destinations are sometimes thriving, sometimes struggling, but all offering intimate views of the wide range of gay experiences in America: POC, white, trans, cis; past, present, and future.
