Michael LaBorn at Bindery Books has acquired world rights to BUZZARD by debut author Inez Ray! Set in 2110 and pitched as Mad Max Fury Road meets The Handmaid’s Tale, it follows Mae, a midwife incarcerated for providing abortions. Against the backdrop of the climate ravaged American west, she serves out her sentence in a corporate prison taking care of teenage drone pilots. When she discovers an illicit pregnancy in one of her charges, she must decide whether to jeopardize the promise of reunification with her own children to aide a pregnant teen.
Inez Ray is a Puget Sound based, California-born Science Fiction writer. After earning a BA in Creative Writing from San Francisco State she went on to bartend for several years before meeting her beloved partner and becoming a parent. Experiencing the horrific state of perinatal care in America drew her to doula work and reproductive justice and then eventually back to writing. She is a member of BARN on Bainbridge Island, and an editor for the Writers’ Studio Collection. She is a founding member of Content Hospital, a rowdy critique group of speculative fiction writers based in Seattle.
All of her stories are populated by characters that aren’t always heroes, often reckoning with systems of power and control, that mirror our own world. When she is not inviting readers to think acutely about the future of humanity, she is serving the families in her rural community as a doula and midwife assistant, parenting her three children, or throwing a stick for her two dogs. Connect with her and her writing at Inezray.com.
Inez is represented by Brenna English-Loeb.
Congratulations, Inez!
